Many individuals and organizations have taken their first step into the world of both 3D and digital textile printing. The incorporation of print in the fashion world has created new forms of thinking and innovation, allowing creators to push the boundaries of design. This week, STYL3D has chosen to spotlight just a few of the many individuals and companies who have utilized 3D and digital textile printing to produce creative projects in the world of fashion.
My creative side is identifying all these great entrepreneurial creative people that come up with great ideas, whether they are in fashion or technology or a new tool to improve ourselves.
– Carmen Busquets (Entrepreneur and philanthropist, early champion of the fashion-tech space)
Currently, 3D printed and digital textile printing are most often seen in art pieces or haute couture. As such, it is less likely to see a clothing line produced through 3D printing or DTG (Direct-to-Garment) in a mainstream clothing store. However, the future holds many opportunities for change. The following designers are at the forefront of integrating fashion and technology, bringing them directly to our shopping carts in the near future.

A popular figure in the new field of “FashionTech” is Dutch-based designer Anouk Wipprecht. Her work is most commonly referred to as ‘technology couture,’ utilizing technology to function as more than just clothing. For example, Wipprecht’s “Spider Dress” makes use of 3D printed elements along with motion sensors to create a dress that protects your personal space. This idea was later developed in one of her recent designs, the ”Proximity Dress,” moving to create a barrier against those who enter the wearer’s personal space. Created entirely from 3D printed technologies, the dress was built through printing processes such as Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) and Polyjet printing.

Kornit Digital (@kornitdigital)
With their very own Kornit Fashion Week preparing to launch in Los Angeles on November 2nd, Kornit Digital has become quite the powerhouse when it comes to innovative thinking in the world of fashion and technology. With processes that stand out in couture fashion, some of the works from the Israeli-American company could soon be seen on the racks of popular clothing stores. Using digital textile printing, Kornit is able to produce customizable clothing patterns along with embedded 3D objects such as embroidery. These new opportunities ensure a more automated design process, while also promoting sustainability as a result of an additive rather than a subtractive process.
